Green House Sold For Record Price Of £7.2million

Finally, green architecture is appreciated at its true value as a green home designed by Sarah Featherstone was sold for a record price of £7.2million the equivalent of $14.2 million. The structure is called Orchid House and it’s a part of the Lower Mill Estate, the project that has the purpose of turning a swamp into a 450 acres natural reserve.

The Orchid House will generate more energy than it needs thanks to geothermal heating, and it should subsidize a cost of property of about £3,000 per square foot. The design of the house was inspired by the flora and the fauna of the landscape area, but I have to say that the Orchid is not entirely green as it’s based on laminated veneer lumber which uses adhesives to keep the wood layers together.

For the moment, the buyer have chosen to remain anonymous and in 2011 when the building will be completed he will be very satisfied as the living space is very flexible. Some reports say that the buyer is a celebrity as Brad Pitt and Kylie Minogue showed their interest for the Orchid House.

that’s a lot of commitment, wow.
Nice looking pad! Love it!
What a huge waste of money. Just build a friggin cabin already and be done with it.
Beautiful! Hope it leads to a design for the common man and his family (expect more ‘common men’ as oil prices rise). The world needs research and development in housing struggling people fast! Envision a solar/geothermal, heated/cooled, solar powered, super-insulated, humanely sized, ‘zero’ upkeep, ‘zero’ running cost, two bedroom, composting toilet, water preserving, greenhouse included (we will grow GMO veggies to survive?), cheap to build in volume, design. Hurricane Katrina was the warning and we were not prepared, in fact we looked like assholes! Next we will need to house the hoards evicted in the mortgage scandal/breakdown, then those extremely oil dependent (by distance from workplace or by heating costs). This huge and unavoidable demand is upon us. FEMA trailers were a short-sighted, short term, stopgap solution that didn’t really work well. Beware, you may find yourself in one if better methods aren’t found.
Colonization of huge areas with eco-sensitive survival units that will last a long time is a better answer. Cast concrete domes, blown foam, modular, geodesic domes, even stackwood, all have been explored in the past. We need innovative current technology units to keep our great society alive once oil reaches $140.00 bbl, and even GM concedes that it was bad management to continue SUV production and closes the doors on that idea. America, wake up! it is too late to prepare for the future, it is time to survive in the present.
Just more bragging rights for the rich.
Good, now hopefully all the uber-rich will plonk down 14 million a piece to get their swamp eggs too.
Where does the waste and drainage go?
it looks like Java The Hut
bullshit…
woudnt it be greener if it wasnt there
£7.2m…. I’l give you 50p for it. Looks cool, but definately one of those things celebrities will buy too appear eco friendly. It’s a pity their other houses will waste energy and world resources no end. Just like their Toyota Prius they run around in forgetting to tell you about their fleets of supercars getting 8mpg! JUst something to make them seem more caring boost their cred.
doesnt make sense. . there should be a complex of energy saving green buildings. . in the heart of the cities. .and available as the rural developement programs. . . nt just houses which the rich can buy and then brag about . .. .
